Questions to Ask a Remodeler Before Work Begins.
Dreaming about remodeling your house can be a lot of fun, but when this becomes a reality, it is often fraught with unnecessary stress and problems. One of the best ways to avoid this strain is to choose a reputable construction company and to know what remodeling questions to ask them. Having the right team can completely change a project’s outcome, as well as making it a fun, and even enjoyable, process!
At Custom Design and Construction, we have almost 40 years of experience in helping people realize their dream homes. With all this knowledge, we know the kind of remodeling questions you should be asking and what might be causing you concern before the work even begins.

Am I liable if someone is injured on-site?
Before you begin any project, one of the questions to ask a construction company is if they are properly certified. Choosing a reputable company that is both licensed and insured, but also bonded and ensures workers’ compensation insurance can help put your mind at ease before you even begin. Having these things in place means that they are liable for any injuries that may happen onsite, not you. Custom Design and Construction is fully up to date, and our license can be viewed here, as well as displayed on our website.

If something breaks after the work is finished, is it my responsibility to fix it?
We strongly believe in the quality of our work, which is why we offer a five-year warranty as standard. We not only believe our work is built to last, but we also believe in building client relationships that don’t end the second the last brick is laid. Too often, contractors are nowhere to be seen once the work is complete, leaving you to foot the bill for any issues or problems that arise. That is why we are always only a phone call away, here to support you with your finished project.

People have told me it’s impossible to get hold of contractors. How can I stop this from happening to me?
One of the remodeling questions you should ask is how often you will receive updates. At Custom Design and Construction, we know how much your home means to you and how much it costs to do a remodel. This is why we prioritize building an authentic relationship with you from day one. We have found that it is only by knowing you as a client that we can truly create your perfect space. This is why you will be given regular meetings with your team, where you can ask questions and get updates on the progress.
We also use an online app called Buildertrend. This handy portal is a convenient way to update you on your remodel’s progress in real-time.

What if I change my mind once the project has started?
This is a great home remodeling question, and it is natural that we change our minds! Just because work has started doesn’t mean you can’t continue to explore new ideas and see the space evolve. We have created an effective process that allows you to change and edit your design throughout.
If you make a change to the original design, a Change Order will be issued to ensure everyone on the team is on the same page and aware of the edit. In a more practical way, it means that there is clear documentation about any changes. We will make sure that everyone thoroughly understands the Change Order before it is put into effect to help keep your dream remodel on track.

How do I know my contractor won’t ask me for more money once the project is finished?
One of the most important questions to ask a remodeler before work begins is for a final price. Any additional costs that may be incurred should be clearly outlined, so you aren’t faced with any nasty surprises at the end.
After we have worked with you on your home remodel, we will do a final walkthrough with you. Once everyone is happy that the work is complete and to the expected standard, you will be given a Lien Waiver to sign. This document says that all work is done and all payments are completed. This may feel like an official way to say goodbye after a long journey with us, but it means you can move forward and enjoy your space without the threat of any unexpected bills or costs.
