How we build indoor outdoor living spaces that actually work.
California is "The Golden State" for good reason, with some of the best weather in the country, and we all want to be able to capitalize on that in our homes. In the South Bay, that means mild winters, warm evenings, and light that makes everything look better. The California indoor outdoor living lifestyle can be achieved by designing the space in a way that draws you, and your guests, outside while still being easily connected to the kitchen, bathrooms, and other common spaces of the home. This creates an open, warm, and inviting home that everyone will enjoy gathering in.

How doors and glazing create indoor outdoor living spaces
Being able to work with the home you have and still achieve the vision you want is the goal. Most South Bay homes have more potential than their current layout suggests, and often, the biggest gains come from the simplest changes.
A great way to utilize the existing floor plan while still achieving this indoor outdoor lifestyle is by turning existing windows into doors, or by adding additional glass doors that can be opened up to the outdoor space, as we did in this project. Folding or sliding glass walls take this further, effectively dissolving the boundary between inside and outside when you want it open. The natural light can brighten the space to make it feel more welcoming and open, and it can make entertaining or watching the kids play while you cook dinner or relax on the couch a genuinely different experience. Spaces feel larger, warmer, and more connected, which is exactly what you want in a home you love spending time in.
If you're working with an existing floor plan, this kind of change is often one of the most impactful you can make without touching the wider structure of the home.

Making the outdoor space worth being in
Creating great indoor outdoor living spaces means the outdoor area has to pull its weight too. Adding beautiful natural flagstone pathways, landscaping, pergolas and porches can really make a huge difference in the appearance of the home, and make you want to be outside to enjoy it. A well-placed pergola or covered patio gives the outdoor space definition, and somewhere that feels more intentional, not just somewhere the furniture lives. Thoughtful planting and hardscaping tie it together and give the exterior the same sense of care as the interior.
These aren't decorative extras. They're part of what makes an indoor outdoor living space work as a whole.

Lighting the space after dark
A great indoor outdoor connection shouldn't stop when the sun goes down. After getting an exterior facelift, using low-voltage exterior lighting can be a great option to ensure the outside of your house is well-lit while still being energy efficient. Done well, it adds warmth and safety in equal measure and extends the hours you actually spend outside well into the evening!

When bigger structural changes are the right call
Some homes may require bigger exterior changes if the layout is changing or square footage is being added. This can mean moving driveways, adding structures, or even moving entries into the home. Changes like this can really transform a space and create a natural and easy flow within the home.
These are bigger moves, but they're worth considering when the current layout is working against you. A design-build team handles all of this as one joined-up process, whatever the scale. Having design and construction under one roof means every decision gets made with the full picture in mind. The indoor outdoor flow gets thought through from the start, not added on at the end.

Your South Bay home is ready for this
There aren't many places where indoor outdoor living spaces are as achievable, or as rewarding, as the South Bay. The climate makes it possible year-round. The homes here (many with strong bones and good existing footprints) make it practical and worthwhile.
