2020 at a Glance: Focus on the Small Things

Wow, what a year! If there is one common thread to 2020, it has been a year to gain perspective in every part of our life, starting with home and family. More than ever we are able to notice the small things that make life so precious. With that in mind, to conclude 2020, we want to showcase some of the special details of our work this year that truly make big differences. Here’s our top 10:

10. More wine, please! Borrowing a little kitchen space to integrate wine storage is a great way to create a multipurpose space that is also fun for entertaining and keeping your wine inventory at its proper temperatures.

9. Hello Hardware. The jewelry of the cabinets. With all these moving parts, it can be hard to remember that design is in the details, too; and hardware is a detail that can easily become an afterthought. The right knob or pull can make a serious visual impact, elevating the room in a way that is easy and effortless.

8. Bring the Light! What a better way to show off your culinary creations or create a flattering glow than with natural light. These spaces were designed to make the most of abundant sunlight.

7. Form + Function. Kitchen corners can be tough losing valuable space for storage and limited access to items that get lost in hard to reach areas. This solution creates great accessibility to otherwise dead space.

6. Not Your Average Tile! Available in a kaleidoscope of colorways and different designs, wall tiles both protect and personalize the hardest-working room in your home. From sophisticated styles mosaics to hexagons and bold geometric designs, a wall tile is sure to inspire your space.

5. There's a Space for Everything! Replacing the window ledge or shower-caddy, a shower niche is highly functional and a great opportunity to add a design accent.

4. Open Display. Turning everyday items into design accessories adds both form and function while creating a lighter, more open feel.

3. Tidying Up. If clutter drives you crazy, or you crave a more efficient kitchen, consider what you can hide in order to achieve the form and the function you want. Major appliances, dishwashers, microwaves and coffee makers can all be concealed behind cabinet panels to create a clean, seamless, clutter-free space.

2. Color, Color, Color! Not so long ago, kitchen islands matched the cabinets. That was until color blocking and accent walls entered the design scene allowing a pop of color in the kitchen to provide an eye-catching centerpiece as well as focal point that draws the eye.

1. Made in the USA! Now more than ever, it’s important to shop local - from the lighted mirrors to the large format tile; this project consists of only products made in the USA.

Phil Pallen

I'm Phil Pallen, a brand and AI strategist who has spent 15 years helping small businesses figure out who they are, say it clearly, and show up consistently. About six years ago, I started creating content on the side as a way to teach strategy and tools to people who wanted to build their brands themselves. That side project now makes up 80% of what I do, and it has given me hands-on experience with hundreds of tools, partnerships with over 150 brands including Adobe, and a clear sense of what actually works for small businesses.

I have delivered keynote speeches on five continents, written AI for Small Business, and created Brandmasters, a private membership community for small business owners serious about their brand.

I am not just someone who talks about this stuff. I live it, test it, and teach it every day.
